Un-fair Tourism
However I like to evaluate over-all tourism and just named the thread as Unfair tourism..Its because of following chart that shows countries where more than 20 Million tourists arrive annually.. Unfairly most of these countries are well-developed.. When we the poor nation is happy with 2 Million arrivals these countries enjoy well above 20 Million tourists..
Source I use is

Why is this a big surprise? A sudda will always prefer to do his sudda holiday in a clean country with clear rules and regulations and proper freedom to have fun. That is why they will go to developed countries. A begegr country like Thailand has to use Jiggy to draw 20 million tourists and natural attraction low gets 10 million tourists with Casinos+ Jiggy.
We only get 1 million because of our reputation as a war torn mess. To get to 20 million we will need to provide Casinos and Jiggy and we'll need proper rule of law so that friends of our politikkas don't go around murdering and raping suddas.
The other option is to jazz up our Royal brothel in Sigiriya and bring up some stories to make it comparable to the Pyramids. The Sigiriya story can be made to sound better than Cleopatra.

Re: Un-fair Tourism
We need a cultural shift equally.
The Pavement Hawker mentality has to be eradicated if we really want to see a jump.
People (Private buses, three wheelers, Gift shops, other transport guys, hotels, motels and eateries etc) fleecing visitors are having a very negative impact.
Word of mouth is very powerful.
We need effective, well conversant and visible tourist police especially in areas where tourists visit more and in main cities, buses and train terminus etc.

Re: Un-fair Tourism
Second category for various reasons.. Saudi Arab for pilgrimages.. Egypt for Pyramids and the decline of tourism in Egypt is due to national security lapses..Greece for historical importance...
With all clean Singapore is in the second category.. but numbers are slowly growing..

Jiggy has raised some valid points in sarcastic way, Now our largest feeder market is China and second is India, that is a main reason why the number growth has not reflected proportionately in listed hotel's occupancy ratio or revenue. most of them stay in cheap, unclassified places. Some take meals in "Saiwar Kade". We also get a new catogary or tourist called "Chinese beggars"

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
All in all we should tap the high income category of Indians and Chinese. Those huge markets are the way to move forward. Like jiggy said we need at least one high end casino at least at JKH water front project.

According to above article we got highest visitors in July month, which was earlier off season for western tourist. Because of these changing dynamics, we get tourists all over the year which is a good development.
If we want to attract high spending tourist, our product quality should be improved especially professionalism in the industry. Human resource development needs to go a long way both in numbers and quality if we are talking millions in numbers, It's obvious that we need high end shopping more than "ODEL", glad to see few of them are on the way.

Re: Un-fair Tourism
He was into tourism and what he told me was that people in the North are so fond of sea, beach and precious stones.
But they have none available there.
They have money to spend and they are known to be big spenders too.
He asked me, as you have all those down there and why aren't you use them for your advantage.
He was duly impressed when I mentioned about Unawatuna, Rummassala hillock, Hawa-eliya etc, place have direct references in epic Ramayana.
If you have read Sindbad the sailor’s voyage, they thought Adam’s Peak was the world highest mountain in the World, as it can be seen three days sails away on water.
Arabic literature refers a paradise on earth and it is called "Sama-kand" and can it be "Sama nala Kanda"?

Re: Un-fair Tourism
Being a traveler I have seen both types... When I went to Trincomalee I ve seen white skinned tourists who come to an average restaurant for lunch and check price of each food item before buying where we just order and pay at the end...
But at House of Fashion I have seen many demanding Indian buyers who queue into pay bills over Rs 20,000.00..
Chinese consist of again both upper and lower... I ve met Chinese who sell wrist watches in the pavement and those who fill tables at Crab Ministry and buy Gems...
Because of cheap media and cheap politics we see only low spending tourists... but just check Hotel performance and I would say SL tourism is picking up...
Kith
Yes our historical relationships with various stories like Ramayanaya, Sinbad the Sailor are worth marketing...
One of my good friend also take a google map on his mobile phone and show to anyone who talk to him and promote SL in all his trips...

Shopping is a major factor that can please a tourist, where we lack quantity at the moment. But It seems the gap to be filled like many mixed development projects to commence operation within next 3-4 years.

I agree with your comment above.. We need more shopping complexes and less duty.. Dubai is a superb place for toursits.. Dubai Shopping Festival is a marvelous advertising for the industry.. This time there were gold prices in Kilos ..
Yet there are other ways as well.. Think about Vietnam...It is in the third category...
1995-99 | 2000-04 | 2005-09 | 2010-14 | |
Vietnam | 5,050,000 | 6,014,000 | 6,848,000 | 7,572,000 |

Re: Un-fair Tourism
Decide what to promote and what to sell.
India and China have more deep historical connections with us and we should know the history first to come up with suitable packages.
Unfortunately our Promoters & Ad guys still lack those knowledge sadly.

Hybrid please compare the plantation industry of SL with tourist industry and check the results yourself
Or ask from tourist guide who will tell you that the whites are also bag packers
Meet a gem seller and ask about chinese buyers
Visit yourself to luxury dinning places and check the number of chinese in SL enjoying the luxury
Go to maldives and check the luxury resorts now enjoyed by Chinese tourists
Visit Malaysia or House of Fashion and look at Indian spendings...
Watch the movie sixth sense and see the Indians buying diamonds in us where americans work as sales reps
Read Rajrajaratnam book and find that many rich educated americans are Indians
World is Changing... The place Jews enjoyed in finance field of US now enjoying by Indians...
China and India are going to be the biggest economies and for a great number of years in history they were

Re: Un-fair Tourism
This is one famous quote of Dayasiri and such quotes echoed in minds of investors ( retail) and they did not even looked at hotel shares.. This is why I am saying cheap politicians have brain-washed minds and unfortunately our investors don't analyze themselves but above statements are taken for granted..I don't care about what is the party Dayasiri is representing at the moment and next but cheap politicians are always cheap...
රබර් හැදෙන මකන කෑල්ලක් නොහදන රට.. මිනිරන් තියෙන පැන්සල් නොහදන රට
This was another nice quote of Aunra Kumara earlier.. But he may have not read annual reports of REXP, DIPD or BOGA... this is again why I am against Cheap Politicians..
With this lets concentrate our discussion back to tourism ... Or else Admins have to reluctantly move this to Political Discussion

Re: Un-fair Tourism
I see nothing wrong with such comments.
It is like some of the oil producing countries do not have sufficient refinery facilities, thus forcing them to import refined products later at higher price.
( I have decided to stay away from political discussions and hope Admin will be unbiased here ).

YK,
You jumping to confusions won't help the least.
I am well read sir, and well travelled also.
I have been to the Maldives and seen for my self and interviewed many hotel managers and staff who know the business. In the Maldives, the Chinese are know as the "noodle guests" and the Indians are famous for using the electrica water heater for purposes other than it was intended for.
Also, don't think that you are all knowing and don't try to impose your thinking and background on others.
They just sync the wrong way!

Re: Un-fair Tourism
The cheese and Indians are thrada may be many in number but 2 billion of them are below the educated line and their attitudes and spending power is poor.
How many rich Chinese and Indians can boost the hotel trade compared to the average western population?
The Indians are known for crowding into one small room to cut costs on travel. They spend the least.
Both are stingy!
Also statistics do lie and just collecting data doent, mean the integrity of the data is accurate and the methodology used is reflecting the desired information that good decisions can be made.

Re: Un-fair Tourism
I warmly welcome your criticism... Indeed I too recalculate my assumptions , conclusions once I had to face arguments like yours...
Tourists are branded by those who involved in tourism with nice nick names..
We who read the same book may have different views about the book after reading.. Having arguments like this will be beneficial for both...
Thanx Hybrid for make me to see your side as well
with this I may move onto another area that is different types of tourists ....
