SriLankan claims Rs. 114 m from Presidential Secretariat

Early December trip to Tirupati costs SriLankan Rs. 4 million

SriLankan Airlines has written to the Presidential Secretariat claiming nearly 114 million rupees accrued as expenses for Presidential voyages since 2011.

SriLankan Chairman Ajith Dias in a detailed letter has asked the Secretary to the President P.B.Abeykoon to settle a sum of one hundred and thirteen million, four hundred and ninety four thousand and seven hundred and twenty four as expenses incurred for Presidential voyages during the last three years of the tenure of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Chairman Dias has given details of the expenses and the taxes levied separately.

The SriLankan invoice to the Presidential Secretariat had also included the charges for the charter flight hired by Rajapaksa to visit Tirupati on December 9 and 10, 2014.

Rajapaksa accompanied by UNP former General Secretary Tissa Attanayake visited the renowned Tirupati temple in South India less than a month before the January 2015 Presidential election.

The expenses incurred for the Tirupati flight which was largely considered as unofficial, amounts to nearly Rupees four million.

දෙවැන්න ලෙස රටේ ජාතිවාදය ඇවිලවීම සිදුකළ යුතු බවත් ඊට රාවණා බලය යොදා ගැනීමටත් තීරණය කර තිබේ. රාවණා බලය මගින් අත් පත්‍රිකාවක් බෙදීමටත් 12 දා රාත්‍රී නමක් ගමක් නොමැති පෝස්ටරයක් ඇලවීමටත් සැලසුම් කර ඇත. එම පෝස්ටරය මගින් රනිල් රට බෙදීමට යන බවට ජනතාව බියවැද්දීමට තීරණය කර ඇත. පෝස්ටරය මුද්‍රණය කිරීම ඩලස්ගේ හිටපු මාධ්‍ය සම්බන්ධීකාරකවරයෙකුට පවරා තිබේ. ඊට සමගාමීව යාපනය චාවාකච්චේරිය කිලිනොච්චිය ප්‍රදේශ වලින් සිංහල විරෝධී ජාතිවාදයක් ඇවිලවිය යුතු යැයිද එවිට එය පෙන්වා දකුණේ ජාතිවාදය උත්සන්න කළ හැකි යයිද සාකච්ඡා කර තිබේ.

බුද්ධි අංශ නිලධාරියා මේ තොරතුරු ලංකා ඊ නිව්ස් වෙත හෙලිකෙළේ අදාල අංශ මේ සම්බන්ධයෙන් දැනුවත් කර ඇති නමුත් මාධ්‍ය මගින් හෙලි කිරීමෙන් කුමන්ත්‍රණකරුවන්ගේ සැලසුම් අඩාල කළ හැකි යයි පවසමිනි.

මේ අතර ලංකා ඊ නිව්ස් අභ්‍යන්තර තොරතුරු සේවයේ කුරුණෑගල තොරතුරු කරු පවසන්නේ ජොන්ස්ටන් ප්‍රනාන්දුගේ සැක කටයුතු ජීප් රථ කීපයක් හා ජයරත්න හේරත්ගේ කන්ඩායමක් තැන්තැන්වල රැක සිටිමින් යම් කිසි සිදුවීමකට අර අඳින බවයි. ඔවුන්ගේ වාහන තුලම අරක්කු බොමින් ගත කරන මේ පිරිස් අත් අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට පොලිසිය උනන්දුවක් නැති බවද පවසයි.

During the election, Police is under election commissionor' command and it prevails now. That's the good governance.

On the other hand, At any given time, Police department should not rely on which government  is in power to carry out their duty. That shows how deep the shit we were in before regime change, and the whole system including Police needs serius rehabilitation,  as the whols society is a victim of a gang rape by the previous regime. It takes time, cannot be done in few months. Not only the police, Judiciary,  bribary commision, and many other government bodies needs serious rehabilitation too.  All were in slavery mentality for years, and this  is the bitter truth.

Police department brought to this status not only by MR regime. i think you were a toddler when sotthi upali sat on OICs chair and police men had to call him "sir" and salute the bugger. This is a result of a continuous process started from 70's, not fair putting all the blame on MR

Police is like that (my apologies to a rare few good officers for generalizing the issue) but we cannot blame them alone as we are part of the culture.
How many of us here have not paid a bribe to get something done faster or and illegal way.
How many of us have used back door connections to get something done or obtain an undue favour.
Self purification first before we pointing fingers at others.
It should be a continuous processes.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in an election manifesto that is widely seen as the most enlightened though somewhat idealistic also is proposing that the dowry system be scrapped and made illegal as part of the socio-cultural transformation to bring about gender equality and women’s rights.

But the problem here is that no one have ever admitted their own blunders and apologized and promised to correct themselves voluntarily.
(Until and unless we throw them out).
It is (strongly) believe that someone's future actions will be viewed based on the person's past actions.
To be very frank, I am not really happy with some of the past actions of many of the NATO boys now trying to portrait as angels.

Thanks for your valuable words kith. We cannot resolve these problems just by pointing fingers to MR regime. I'm not saying they are completely innocent, but the people who are accusing MR also have serious issues. If wee need to move forward we the corrective measures should go beyond pointing fingers to the last regime. (like all did in the past, putting blame of past rulers)

In my opinion it will take at least 20 years to change this type of a culture, for that we need a good/ tough/ dedicated leadership and lot of other socio economic changes.
These problems are not simple as we see.

Sri Lanka police seek help to track rally gunmen

Sri Lankan police appealed for information Saturday to track down four gunmen who opened fire at a ruling party rally in the capital, killing a woman and wounding 12 other people.

Several teams of detective were assembled Saturday, a day after the daring attack on Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake's campaign rally for the August 17 parliamentary elections, police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said.

The minister who escaped unhurt accused the opposition United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) of carrying out the attack, a charge denied by the party.

Treasury injects Rs. 239.5 bln capital into 9 SOBEs

Nine State-Owned Business Enterprises (SOBEs) have been provided with a massive sum of Rs.239.5 billion in capital infusion, liquidity improvement and debt capitalisation, as government bolsters their sustainability amid heavy losses, official sources revealed.

This infusion was made from the 2015 budget issuing Treasury bonds to offset budgetary problems and meet capital reserve requirements and debts of those SOBEs, a senior government official said. According to details presented to the cabinet on Wednesday by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Sri Lanka’s total debt position (foreign and local) as at July 3, 2015 is Rs. 7,959,939.39 million (Rs. 7 trillion).

According to an analysis by the Business Times based on Central Bank data for January-July 2015 of money raised by the government, US$1 billion came from sovereign bonds; $1.3 billion from SL development bonds; Rs. 416.3 billion from treasury bonds and Rs.413 billion (issues and re-issues) were from treasury bills.
