Lack of innovation is another issue with tea, compared to coffee.
Costa coffee, Starbucks, Second cup etc etc but not competing Tea innovations.
Further, we do not hammer enough the point well that it is to be taken as a health drink too.

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka’s regional plantation companies say their losses from the collapse in commodity prices are too heavy to grant a wage increase to workers without higher productivity.
The Planters’ Association, which represents regional plantation companies, said a mere 26-minute increase in the ‘effective plucking time’ will enable a worker to pluck two kilos more of tea leaves, without any increase in total working time.
“We can pay only what we can afford,” PA Chairman Roshan Rajadurai SAID. “We can’t pay more than what we earn.”
According to the estimates of the RPCs, a one rupee increase in labour wages will automatically increase the cost of production of tea by 52 cents per kilogramme.
The RPcs are currently negotiating a new collective agreement governing wages with estate labour unions with the existing one having ended on 31 March 2015.
Rajadurai said they were proposing a wage hike linked to better productivity that would enable the firms to cope with the market downturn while better compensating workers.
“The tea market has been on a downward trend since April 2014,” Rajadurai told a news conference. “It’s not that we don’t want to pay, but it’s our inability to pay. Global prices are beyond our control.”
He said there had been an 11-fold increase in estate wages in the last 20 years after they were privatised while tea prices have gone up by only six times
.
“We been giving big wage hikes although tea prices have not kept pace. This year there has been significant reduction in prices and RPCs are making heavy losses.”
Workers in Sri Lankan estates have higher wages and better living standards and facilities than those in other tea- growing countries, he said.

How about the guys there with secondary level education and working as Chinna Dorais & Periya Dorais.
One down fall in plantation I see is, as it was kept as an exclusive club for a privileged few, not much of grey matter has not got into the system for centuries.
No much new thinking, methods etc but just trying to implement borrowed stuffs from elsewhere lock, stock and barrel.

Plantation sector has not done well last year as we have discussed in many threads.. Yet the annual report of TPL was presented very nicely with a cup shaped book...Again TPL deserve the best annual report in plantation sector ( though I am yet to see other annual reports )...

2015 was a fifteen month year for TPL as they moved from December ending company status to March ending company. Thus if you neglect 2015, you cant see much of a difference between 2014 and 2016

Unlike Hydro Power sector , the Net Profit as a percentage to Revenue remain as low as below 6% in Tea based plantation. Yet the Palm Oil based plantation sector's net profit margin remains high.

Just compare Net Profit/Revenue percentage of Shalimar where the plantation company is purely based on Palm.

2. Worsening geopolitical scenario for tea buyer nations like Russia, Iran, Libiya, Iraq
3. Fueling hype and unrealistic expectations from socioeconomic point of view, where ten day strikes demanding of salary hikes
4. extremities of weather conditions...
5. Removal of agricultural subsidy.
The removal of agricultural subsidy was discussed in many relevant threads and I can remember on ELPL.N000 thread as well.
Quoting from Page 23 of TPL annual report.
" Whilst we are adversely impacted with the withdrawal of the fertilizer subsidy a cost increase of approximate Rs 75 Million in the coming year for the company, we earnestly request the authorities to give some concessions to the RPCs as well: as we have always upheld environmental responsibility in our fertilizer applications."

The dividend policy of the company is rather true to the expectation of equity financing. The company will declare dividends, when the company makes profit and when its management decides to do so. So the company need not to cook the books and commit to pay dividends...
