Google launches Street View imagery of SL
Google says, “Today’s launch brings the total number of countries where Street View is available to 76. Street View is a popular feature in Google Maps, that allows people to virtually explore and navigate places. People can access street-level imagery by zooming into the location on Google Maps, or by dragging the orange “Pegman” icon from the bottom right-hand corner of the map onto a blue highlighted street.”
Google began driving in Sri Lanka in December 2014 and finished collecting imagery in February this year. To capture the imagery, Google drove close to 50,000 kilometers across every state and province so that one can virtually explore this landscape from coast to coast.
The company stated that in 2015, 1.8 million tourists visited Sri Lanka. By bringing Street View to Sri Lanka, Google hopes to create a new way of showcasing Sri Lanka’s beauty to the world while helping strengthen the country’s already burgeoning tourism trade.
“We are delighted to bring imagery of Sri Lanka to Street View on Google Maps” said Helena Lersch, Public Policy Manager Google. “Sri Lanka is already a popular tourist destination, and we hope Street View will make the country even more accessible to people interested in exploring and visiting here. Whether you continue your journey in Google Maps or are inspired to visit in person, we invite you to enjoy the Land of Lions” she continued.

Re: Google launches Street View imagery of SL
HPGoogle announced that its Street View imagery would be available in Sri Lanka from today although most street images in Colombo would consist of 360-degree view of people protesting, thus obscuring most other aspects of the streets that are normally visible in other countries.
Speaking at a press conference, the Big Brother of Google Street View said, “We sent out vehicles around Colombo several times and all we managed to capture were images of people holding placards and shouting. Of course, some of these are iconic images so we decided to launch the Street View program by showcasing them. We are waiting to re-shoot the imagery on a day when there are no protests although we have been advised that we return in 2017 as the protest calendar is full.”
“We wanted to showcase the beauty of the island to the world but we will have to wait a while longer to do that. However, we managed to capture some imagery from the wonderful beaches including one image of local being turned away from a seaside restaurant for not being white,” he added. “One street has a name so long that the only image we managed to capture was the name board, which covered the whole street.”
The company said that the imagery will also help nosy Sri Lankans find out what their friend’s houses actually look like so they can speculate how much they paid for it among their gossip circle.

Anyone knows how they took those images? Satellite?
It's 360 degree - 3D images and you can run through the whole street. Very useful when you are stranded in middle of an unknown place.
Good for cab drivers too.
