at a glance,  40 + 60 = 100 /2  = 50 mph

as the figures are   rates  - distance per unit of time- , averaging as above is not correct.

say the distance is 40 miles

then time taken 40miles at 40mph = 1 hr  (or 60 mins)
return 40miles at 60 mph = 40/60 =  0.66 hrs (or 40 mins)

total = 80 miles traveled in 1.66 hrs

(80miles/1.66hrs )x 1hr = 48 mph
