Sri Lanka has dropped to 120th in the 2017 World Happiness Index, an annual ranking which assesses countries in terms of happiness and well-being rather than from an economic perspective.
In the report published last year which took into consideration the years between 2013 to 2015 Sri Lanka was ranked 117th and in the latest report dropped 3 spots.
The research is published by the UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network and aims to show that ‘well-being and happiness are critical indicators of a nation’s economic and social development, and should be a key aim of policy’.
The rankings are based on six factors – per capita gross domestic product, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, social support and absence of corruption in government or business.
Norway trumped Denmark as the world’s happiest country while Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden round up the top 10 countries.
South Sudan, Liberia, Guinea, Togo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Central African Republic were at the bottom.
Germany was ranked 16th, the UK 19th and France 31st.
The US dropped one spot to 14th.
Burundi dropped one spot to become the unhappiest country in the world, taking the helm from the previous holder the Central African Republic.
