Chile eyes Sri Lanka to target South Asia market

ECONOMYNEXT – Chilean businesses want to use Sri Lanka as a base from which to export to other South Asian markets to slash shipment times of up to two months from the South American country.
The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce said the New Delhi-based Chilean envoy Andres Barbe is on a visit to explore investment potential in Sri Lanka.
During talks, the ambassador talked about the possibilities of Chile focusing on exporting to the Indian and other Asian markets using Sri Lanka as a platform, a statement said.
“It takes 60 days for us to ship our products to the Indian market from Chile, which is very time consuming and also costly,” the Chilean envoy was quoted as saying.
Minerals, forestry, wines and fruits are some of the Chile’s biggest businesses.
Mangala Yapa, Secretary General of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, said Chile can use the tax free Hambantota port as a hub to focus on the South Asian market and the rest of Asia.
Barbe said he intends bringing a Chilean business delegation soon to Sri Lanka. (Colombo/January 12, 2016)
