President to kick off sixth phase of Divi Neguma today

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will launch the sixth phase of the ‘Divi Neguma’ domestic agriculture program on Monday (20 October), the Ministry of Economic Development announced.
President Rajapaksa will plant a sapling at the Temple Trees at an auspicious time and launch the sixth phase Monday.
Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa will join the program from Katana area while 2.5 million families in 23,000 Grama Seva divisions throughout the country will also join the program tomorrow.
The program, which had been divided into three sections: Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, and Cottage Industries, is successfully operating today at both rural and urban levels and in plantation areas under the guidance of the Economic Development Ministry.
Under the sixth phase, seed packets containing seven varieties of food crops will be distributed among 2.5 million families in this crop season. Each family will be provided with seven varieties of vegetable seeds, nine vegetable plants and a fruit sapling. In addition 2.5 million coconut saplings will also be distributed,
The strengthening of 2.5 million domestic economic units in the fisheries and the livestock sectors will also take place tomorrow.
The Divineguma National Program will also distribute chicks and bee boxes and will set up 1,000 ponds to carryout ornamental fish breeding. Model home gardens will be established in 10,000 schools.
The first phase of the Divi Neguma program was launched in March 2011, aiming to revive and strengthen the economy by raising family incomes.
The progress of the Divi Neguma program is being monitored by Economic Development officers and Grama Seva facilitators.
