The Mahinda Rajapaksa international seaport at Hambantota has earned Rs. 740 billion with refuelling foreign ships, said SLPA Chairman Priyath Banduwickrama. He said several foreign ships arrived at the seaport and obtained 5,500 metric tons of fuel.

Rs. 20 million was earned from the imports and transhipment of vehicles within a period of six months.

By July 15, 303 ships arrived at Mahinda Rajapaksa seaport for import and transhipment purposes. These ships have brought 95,751 vehicles, the chairman added. He said the seaport is refuelling ships that arrive via Indonesian, Indian and South African international sea routes. He said the longest ship that arrived at the sea port was IF 380EURYDICED which is 300 metres in length.

The chairman said during last year, 64,524 ships arrived at the seaport under the import and transhipment program. From the inception, 1,71,024 vehicles were imported.The chairman said the ships that travel on the international sea route refuelled in India and Singapore. He said a quantity of 80,000 metric tons of fuel had been stored in the fuel storage tanks to refuel ships.
