    ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said he will fix the economy and ensure judicial independence as the country plunged into a constitutional crisis which has escalated into violence.

    Rajapaksa said he was invited by President Maithripala Sirisena to be Prime Minister as the rupee fell and there was news of a plot.

    "Hence, I accepted the invitation extended to me by the President to assume the position of Prime Minister," he said in a statement.

    "We will eschew the politics of hate and set up an interim government that will protect the human rights of all citizens, that will protect the independence of the judiciary and establish law and order in the country.

    He said he invited all political parties to join and people of all communities religions - Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and the followers of Islam to participate.

    He said the primary objective was to hold provincial council elections and call a parliamentary election as soon as possible. (Colombo/Oct28/2018)
