ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the office of President said shortly after his United National People Alliance of President Maithripala Sirisena had left the ruling coalition.

United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was quoted as saying by private MTV television network that he was still Prime Minister.

Breakaway Sri Lanka Freedom Party parliamentarian Dilan Perera said several minority parties who had contested under the UNP was with then and they had a majority.

Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera in a message said that the appointment Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister was unconstitutional and illegal. "This is an anti democratic coup," he said.

Relations between the two partners have been strained in recent months.
