Gota's Era
This will be almost a diary which I intend to keep CSE activities during the new era.
For the second day I read the same in Mirror Business..
Shares hit over 1 year high, rupee up as Rajapaksa assumes duties...
Will this honey-moon remain for the era.. First Hopes jump high before the reality move slowly..
Let me first show the embryo stage of the new era...
But one should be mindful of that fact that foreign investors exodus has not reversed though locals move up with very high hopes..

We will be adding our two cents from time to time to spice up the conversation.
I think we should give him some space and time to breath as well.

Re: Gota's Era
the distinct feeling you were rooting/campaining for a Gota Government.
( ofcourse YP/UNP didn't do anything much for the economy or for CSE .
Issue we all need to accept)
But this thread, shows me you are the usual YK more balanced I knew.
Well done. This thread is useful and will be great to keep track whether
Gota can deliver what he promised.
I hope Gota does keep his words and achieve something out of the
ordinary for the sake of my/our country. I also hope he gets rid of the bad
eggs on his aide list and improve more " public freedom "and non influence
to justice, taking a note from MR last regime which failed.
Keep going.

Re: Gota's Era
However certain activities of Gota as Prez cannot be easily reversed. For an example replacing photo with logo..
Lets keep adding qualitative and quantitative actions and keep the thread live as a Mirror In front of Gota.
Thanks Ruwan

Re: Gota's Era
After CB's mismanagement of currency 2017 to early 2018, recovery in economy and CSE was starting in Oct 2018. Sirisena/MR coup halted that, again in March 2019 the recovery was back on track, then Easter bombs. Since the broader trend was intact, with 3 successful harvest, reservoir capacity .lower oil prices and Fed easing rates. Consumer purchasing power, (which was predicted in 2018) Remittances and Tourism earnings were recovering, though slowed down by Bombs. Political / policy instability and the inefficient paralysis of the YP regime made even more dysfunctional after October fiasco, were the key dampeners of investor sentiment in the CSE and the Bond market. Quite naturally market viewed elections as the game changer and started rising after nominations. Since there are Gota’ connected market players and companies, they obviously reacted to the changing fortunes of Gota. If Sajith won the market would have dipped and later recovered in line with the broader trend, and if he restored policy stability, the trend would have continued albeit slower than what’s up ahead now.
Economic cycle and political cycle changing at the same time is the perfect storm for Gota’ and CSE. I expect China to open up the BRI tap to turbo charge the SL economy in 2020. If the tax cuts , loan moratorium and Institutional investing in CSE as outlined by Cabrall are carried out, put your seatbelts on. Gota’ has arrived at the right place at the right time, how he will handle it is left to be seen. Besides ,I suspect that it will be a more MR/Basil regime than a Gota’ one.
Us battered investors will get a chance to recover, I only hope that we will have a less fractured population at the end of it or that will be the Black Swan of the future. If geopolitical realities are not handled with suave diplomacy, sophisticated trouble makers will send us back to square one. I think the handful of intellectuals in the Pohottuwa camp are aware of this. But will they have the ability to control the rabble rouses , narrow minded racist and the opportunist who are teeming in that camp? I certainly hope so. This kind of a mandate gives one a chance (as at the end of the war) to do serious reforms in the State sector. Reforms will be painful for some on the short term but an absolute necessity . Good luck Team Gota !

Re: Gota's Era
This one of the the best summarized comments/opinions I read in a while.
Your grasp of what happened since Oct 2018 is on spot.
Fantastic.
ps :
a) I would give you a +3 reps if I could. I can give 1 only.
b) stop under-estimating your ability and trying to be humble
c) Yes , I feel too this can be more of a MR/Basil show than Gota.
But Gota needs to develop his identity and voice now as he is the
President and people placed their faith on him to make positive changes.
Basil is not a people favorite. If Gota does what what Mr 10% want,
god bless us. Ranil will be rubbing his hands eagerly too.
Hope Gota won't let the public trust down.

Gota’ has arrived at the right place at the right time,
YPs got very much a better chance than MR.. I often use charts. MR had the worst era.. He had to face Great Depression of 2008 along with the last Elam war. He had to face longest oil rally.
What has YPs got?.. The best era to run a country but they failed to pick the fruits..
MR took power in 2004 and left office in December 2014.. Just check the oil price during that decade..

1. Trading volumes and Turnover has increased substantially.
2. ASI was on positive note for two days and a marginal drop on 3rd day
3. The alarming factor is Exodus of Foreign Investors. ..
Yet the microscopic view shows some interests on certain counters.
Estimated net foreign buying topped in DIAL.N LKR 48.9mn (USD 273k). Estimated net foreign selling topped in JKH.N LKR 488.8mn (USD 2,727k). Retail activity was witnessed in counters such as LIOC.N, AEL.N, and MGT.N.

Love to know your opinion on bringing in Jayasundara into the inner circle
Fact discussed about him
Removal from public office
In 2008, he was found guilty by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka of a violation of procedure in the awarding of a large contract for the expansion of the Port of Colombo. The court barred him from holding any public office. As a result, he resigned from all public offices he held at the time.
But he was reappointed by MR and the era of HIM before MR is questionable...
However it seems he has learnt the lessons after that..

YK my post was not YP vs Rajapakse, I will leave that stuff to school boys who haven't quite grown up. I could write a scathing critique of YP period beginning with the 100 day program, but I was giving in brief my view of current situ as topic suggested.
2015 was a missed opportunity, definitely. But I think 2010 was the biggest miss. Lets see what happens to this one.

Re: Gota's Era
Sri Lankan equities at 10-year low valuations offer opportunity for capital gains
20 November 2019
The election of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as President of Sri Lanka is expected to launch a new economic cycle for Sri Lanka. A victory margin of 10 percent reflects the confidence in him as an effective leader, who had already delivered peace by winning a 25-year-old civil war and transforming Colombo into one of South Asia’s most beautiful cities, to unleash a tourism boom.
The Rajapaksa election is significant for the return of investor confidence after a string of failures and poor market performance during the previous administration.
Sri Lanka’s growth story began with peace in 2009, followed by long overdue infrastructure investment to develop ports, freeways and power projects that boosted GDP growth to above 6 percent. Although, most projects were debt financed, the return on investment (ROI) on infrastructure was mostly positive.
Tourism boomed from 0.45 million arrivals in 2009 to 2.33 million in 2018. Sri Lanka’s country risk rating was upgraded twice from ‘B’ in 2007 to ‘BB-’ in 2011. Sri Lanka’s stock market price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 7.2 when the war ended in May 2009, reached a peak of 29.53 times in February 2011, while the Indian Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) P/E ratio was only 19.92 times.
Economic downturn over last few years
In 2015, following the election of a new leadership, Sri Lanka moved away from ‘investment-led growth’ economics to ‘inflation targeting’, with high tax and high interest rate, under the International Monetary Fund austerity measures. Foreign investments dried up following the infamous ‘bond scam’.
