Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) earned approximately Rs. 16,000 only as revenue during the month of May

The Government informed Parliament today that the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) earned approximately Rs. 16,000 as revenue during the month of May.

Responding to a question posed by UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva, Minister of Civil Aviation Priyankara Jayarathne said that it will take time for the airport to earn its full potential.

He said that according to details in his possession in Parliament today, the Mattala airport earned Rs. 16, 185 during the month of May.

Dr. Harsha de Silva then asked how long it would take for the Mattala airport to earn revenue on par with the Gatwick Airport in England as predicted by the Government.

The Minister responded saying it would take time and that discussions are already underway between Sri Lanka and several other international airlines to make Mattala one of their landing airports.

The Minister later accused the UNP of dreaming that the Mattala airport will one day be a museum. He insisted that the airport will soon be a profit making project of the Government. (Colombo Gazette)

Its been a while Mattala is operational.

I think all of us agree the need for a 2nd air port. But some of us ( including me) had concerns of the location and logistics.

If seriously the May income is Rs 16000, wonder what the cost of perating the air port per month is?

I think we would be in much better financial situation if state wastage, planning is improved.

Can remember him uploading photos of opening ceremony.I'll tell one fact,the dark blue color uniformed security guards at BIA earns 50000 per month and in Mattala it's close to 1 lak.All the other aspects you can expand the cost.

You got it. Whts important is not 16,000 or 160mn, whats the profit or loss per month. How can it make a profit when only 3 planes are landed a day. One thing about uneducated rulers like MR and the clan is they like to place their name everywhere to show people they did something whether it makes sense or not. Luckily for them there are a lot of people who think these are majestic and wonderful developments.

An airport in the middle of nowhere. When I checked last time, I couldnt find a single major city within 100km radius.

This idiotic concept reminds me the new capital of Myanmar.
