GLAS.N0000 (Piramal Glass Ceylon PLC)
Annual reports of Plantation sector as well as Manufacturing sector often state that State should do more or at least remain without doing harmful things . SL is yet to find a government it suits .
Our company continues to suffer due to the artificially controlled furnance oil prices by the Government which are still substantially higher than international level and fluctuating LPG prices. We will continue to appeal to the government and hope that domestic industries will be protected to complete globally by providing a level playing field.

Sri Lanka will look into the possibility of market pricing furnace oil, which is a key ingredient of export industry, an official said.
Advisor to Finance Ministry Deshal de Mel told Eco said the government would look in to the possibility of bringing furnace oil in to a price formula.
Though petrol and diesel is market priced, furnace oil is not.
Furnace oil, which is a mostly sold to business-to-business and the state-run Ceylon Electricity Board has been kept at a price above cost in the last three years when oil prices fell.
However exporter industry which use furnace oil, like the glass industry has been facing competition from countries with cheaper energy.
Sri Lanka's rupee collapsed in 2018, due to the operation of a soft-peg with contradictory policy by the central bank as well as real effective exchange rate targeting.
This had made Ceylon Petroleum Corporation run a loss of 104 billion rupees, and forex losses of 82 billion rupees raising question why the utility is running such a large open position in foreign exchange and whether it is under coercion from sections of the state to do so.

Sri Lankan unit of Piramal Glass invests Rs.1.3bn to expand export production

EXPANSION: The Sri Lankan unit of Piramal Glass said that it is investing in a new bottling line to expand its export business. Source: Piramal Glass Ceylon Plc Photo.
Piramal Glass Ceylon Plc (PGC), Sri Lanka's glass bottle manufacturer, has invested 1.3 billion rupees on a new bottling line to cater to its export orders, a top official said.
"We are looking forward with much expectations to support our export strategy in the new year expecting to reap the harvest on the new investment done by the company on its 6th bottle production line," Chairman Vijay Shah said.
"This investment of 1.3 billion rupees was done with the objective of expanding its downstream capacities to support exports," he said.
"During the coming year, the company wishes to focus more on its strategy of doing business in the niche high value added specialty segment of glass bottles in the international market," Shah said.
PGC is exporting to India, Australia, Malaysia, Africa, Pakistan, Vietnam, USA and Canada.
There is currently sluggish domestic economic growth, following political unrest and the Easter Sunday terror attack.
Shah said that in 2018/19 the firm's revenue grew 9 percent from a year earlier to 7.4 billion rupees. However, domestic revenue had remained flat at 4.7 billion rupees.
He said the firm had grown despite domestic challenges with a focus on exports, which grew 27 percent to 2.7 billion rupees from a year earlier.
The state had recognized PGC as the leading foreign exchange earner in 2018 in the ceramic, porcelain and glass segment, Shah said.
However, the state continuing to control furnace oil prices instead of allowing market prices to prevail is hurting the firm's competitiveness, he said.
"The company has made several representation to all relevant authorities to link the price of furnace oil to global crude oil prices, as followed in all neighboring countries as a fair and transparent practice," he said.
"This will provide a level playing field for PGC to compete and further grow volumes in the export market."
" Currently due to administered price of furnace oil by CPC with no linkage to international crude oil prices, PGC has a huge competitive disadvantage as compared to all global players in the industry."
PGC is a part of India's Piramal Group, which has interests in pharmaceuticals, glass packaging, real estate and financial services.

Indian container and pharmaceutical glassmaker Piramal Glass is for sale.
The company has appointed Bank of America and Axis Capital to find a buyer and has already approached several multi-national glass manufacturers for their interest in an $800 million deal.
Organisations approached include German container and pharmaceutical manufacturer Gerresheimer and French groups Saverglass and Verescence.
Piramal Glass operates four manufacturing plants: two in India, and one each in Sri Lanka and the USA. According to its website it makes 1475 tonnes of glass a day with 12 furnaces and 65 production lines.
It recently completed the first stage of its digital transformation in its plants and worked with companies including Microsoft to implement the new technology.
It makes glass packaging for the global cosmetics, perfumery, skin-care, food, and beverage sectors.
Piramal Glass said: “Piramal Glass India, a privately held company, is exploring a potential equity capital raise from financial partner/s to augment its accelerated growth strategy.
"PGPL believes that there are emerging opportunities arising out of market consolidation which makes it an opportune time to leverage its capabilities for both organic & inorganic growth.”

Volumes gradually decreased past few days in the consolidation period. if Monday more than 5 Mil volume traded, most probably 9.0 can be broken.
