President Maithripala Sirisena said today that he had decided to appoint a new Governor to the Central Bank within a few hours.

He said this at the Kidney disease prevention programme held in Giradurukotte, Badulla this morning.

(The Economics Advisor to the President, Sarath Rajapathirana is  a former World Bank Division Chief/Senior Advisor with over 27 year career at the Bank. He is a really well read economist with a deep theoretical understanding and practical experience.  He worked in many parts of the World, particularly in East Asia (Lead Economist for Indonesia during its high growth period) and Caribbean/Latin America.  He also speaks Bhasa Indonesia and Spanish well).

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena will appoint a Central Bank Governor for year, State Minster for Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said.

"It will be an experienced person," Yapa said. He declined to say who it was or whether existing Governor will be re-appointed.

He said after one year a decision will be taken whether to extend his appointment. He is expected resign in an year.

Under Sri Lanka's moentary law a Governor is appointed for six years.

Since I.C. had a sting at the CB once, working there again would be much easier than a complete stranger.
(Those insiders will make anyone's life miserable if he or she is not one of them).

Country needs stability and bring in someone capable, who can get the job done but not a darling of anyone will do the trick.
Give him or her the space and peace of mind to do the required work is all what we need right now.

the one and only respectable man in unp is Eran.all others are crooks. if he is appointed i think he can do a unbiased job.  president should have a back bone to make a correct appointment without  givin in to ranil.

Sarath has all the credentials for the job but with his WB track record will not make him a darling of the left.

He should be a person who has had some experience in turning around and economy from consumer based to manufacturing based.

And should have capabilities to convince big guys towards his ideas.

He should believe in projects like (Bangladesh) Grameen.

I don't know of any particular person, but heard, as BS suggested, Dr "Saman Kalegama' is a good candidate.

I wish it was PB Jayasundara. ( Even though he had no options but grant funds for the king's projects while cutting the funds from other politicians)

This is what my idea as well. They can bridge budget deficit in 2 ways. Increase revenue (tax, etc) and Decrease expenses (capital expenses and recurrent expenses, etc)
From that what is best is reducing expenses as they can't impose taxes like this (our tax collection system is a utter failure. Without developing that imposing taxes will not give any benefit)
So the better way is reduce recurrent expenditure (capital expenditure is a must for economic development)
As UKBOY says reducing wasteful government jobs is the only option. (they too will then join productive workforce without being a burden to the government/general population. And also our labour shortages will also become somewhat manageable. So will not need CEPA, or what ever agreement too )

The major problem we have no foreign investors are coming to Sri Lanka and they are continuously pulling out of SL due to anti investor policies.

As far as the policy makers are investor friendly, we will have serious crisis.
