New unit led by DIG Ravi Vidyalankara to probe financial crimes

A new Police division was opened yesterday to probe large-scale financial crimes committed in the country.

This unit was opened by the Minister of Public Order John Amaratunga at Carlwill Place in Kollupitiya.

Addressing a press conference held after the opening of the unit, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravi Vidyalankara told the media that this unit would function directly under the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

“Illegal financial transactions, money laundering, crimes against public funds and property, large scale financial and fraud cases, financial cases concerning national security, health and environment and terrorist financial crimes will all fall under this unit.

This division is established to expedite the current investigations that are going on because the public is waiting for these investigations to complete without any delay,” Vidyalankara said.

He added that at present there were 60 officers on board this new Police division.

Best if a Team was appointed - which includes JVP. Then they also will know the issues and delays in the process and people

Why do they need JVP help, if they are really determine to do something about it?

There are some people who are best for certain jobs - JVP is best for this as long as final ok comes from Ranil or someone as they may go overboard

Current Govt also has people directly or indirectly linked to the "Horu" - so it won't be straightforward as such for some time.

Despite their poor economic and foreign policies, at least two things will be assured.
They will catch all the thieves and they will not steal too.
