Coronavirus: latest global developments with 309,000 deaths

Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis.

– Bundesliga is back –

Germany’s Bundesliga returns to action with the resumption of the first top European league since the lockdown watched closely to see if it provides a blueprint for other competitions.

The football matches are played behind closed doors, in front of vacant, echoing stadiums.

– Over 309,000 dead –

The coronavirus has killed 309,296 people worldwide since it surfaced in China late last year, according to an AFP tally on Saturday at 1900 GMT based on official sources.

There have been at least 4,588,360 officially recorded cases in 196 countries and territories.

The United States has recorded the most deaths at 87,991. It is followed by Britain with 34,466, Italy with 31,763, Spain with 27,563, and France with 27,625 (though this last figure has not been updated since Thursday).

– Santiago lockdown –

Chile’s capital Santiago wakes up for its first day in total lockdown, due to last a week, after it sees a 60 percent leap in confirmed cases.

– Spain stays on high alert –

The Spanish government will seek a fresh extension of its state of emergency that will last “about a month” until the transition out of lockdown is completed, says Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

– Italy to reopen borders –

Italy meanwhile looks to quicken its exit from lockdown, with the government announcing it will reopen to European tourists from early June and scrap a 14-day mandatory quarantine period.

Beginning on June 3, visitors within the Schengen zone will be allowed to enter Italy with no obligation to self-isolate. Italians will also be able to move between regions, though local authorities can limit travel if infections spike.

– English beauty spots urge caution –

Officials in parts of England warn people to stay away from beauty spots on the first weekend since the partial easing of lockdown, with sunny conditions forecast in many places.

The Peak District National Park in northern England takes to Twitter to tell people not to venture there, while officials at other beauty spots tell potential visitors to “think carefully” before coming.

– ‘Corona demos’ in Germany –

As part of a growing wave of demonstrations in Germany by conspiracy theorists, extremists and anti-vaxxers against coronavirus restrictions, thousands of people are set to mass in Stuttgart, Munich and Berlin, with police out in force.

– Air Canada to slash workforce –

Air Canada, which has reduced its flights by 95 percent, announces it will lay off at least half of its approximately 38,000 staff.

Health Minister declares no more community spread of COVID 19

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Health Minister is declaring that for the past three weeks no COVID 19 positive cases have been reported from the general public and that indicates there is no more community transmission of the virus.

Addressing a media briefing on May 20, Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said all the cases have been reported from either Quarantine Centres or the Welisara Navy Camp.

The Sri Lanka Navy cluster of COVID 19 patients has produced 578 infected persons and 221 of them have been discharged from hospital after being cured, Army Commander and head of the COVID 19 Task Force Lt General Shavendra Silva said.

The Director-General of Health Services Dr Anil Jasinghe said that the Health Department had laid down strict guidelines for the Welisara Navy camp to prevent more persons becoming infected.

Some of the Navy personnel from the camp had been moved to quarantine centres and had been detected as infected in the centres, he said.

Jasinghe appealed to the general public to continue to adhere to the guidelines to maintain social distancing and hand hygiene at all times.

He also warned that the danger of dengue fever is rising because of the rainy weather and communities have to be aware of the danger.

“COVID 19 can spread because we have to maintain personal hygiene and practice social distancing but dengue spreads because of communal neglect and bad practice,” he said.

The Army Commander also said several flights carrying Sri Lankan students from Russia and surrounding countries are due to arrive starting today.

No flights came yesterday. (Colombo May 20, 2020)

COVID 19: Total cases 1,055 as 27 cases are diagnosed yesterday

ECONOMYNEXT – The total number of COVID 19 positive cases since the outbreak rose to 1,055 last night with 27 cases being added yesterday the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health said.

Al the patients were diagnosed inside quarantine centres, 15 of them were Dubai returnees, one from Kuwait and eleven from the Navy, COVID 19 Task Force spokesman Colonel Vijitha Hettiarachchi said.

According to the situation reports of the Unit this brings the total number of patients reported for the first three weeks of May to 390, an average of nearly 19 per day.

Last month the total number of patients was 506 an average of a little over 16 patients a day despite the huge upsurge in the numbers because of the large numbers infected in the Navy camp at Welisara where in just 8 days from April 22 to May 1, 354 cases were reported countrywide with 273 emerging from the stricken base.

Health officials in Homagama also confirmed that a 45-year old woman was taken to the National Hospital in Colombo with COVID 19 like symptoms.

The Medical Officer of Health for the area Jagath Kumara told EconomyNext that she was removed by ambulance and they are awaiting the results of PCR tests being performed on her.

She had been removed from a temporary Lodging House, the official said.

The Director-General Health Services Dr Anil Jasinghe said Six hundred and four completely recovered patients were discharged from hospitals by today.

The number of Corona infected patients who are presently receiving treatments in hospitals is 432.

The number of PCR tests performed yesterday, May 21 was 1108, and one patient was identified, he said.

Army Commander Lt General Shavendra Silva said that 2,193 Navy personnel from the Welisara camp have been moved to quarantine centres and that 274 Sailors who had COVID 19 have been discharged from hospital after recovery. (Colombo, May 22, 2020)

I initially  was wondering what is the purpose of doing  the daily updates on Corona at the forum.

( I  on my own check the Corona stats and read the news everyday  on the internet anyway)

But then I realized

a) this is a good archive for future reference one day.
All in one with daily stuff.

b) for the people who don't read news , I guess this will be helpful.

So , good job. Keep it going

Coronavirus: latest global developments: South America new epicenter

Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis.

– South America ‘new epicentre’ –

South America has become “a new epicentre” of the pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) says, following a surge in the number infections, pointing to a particularly worrying situation in Brazil.

– Russia prepares for the worst –

Russia, the country with the second-highest number of infections in the world, will see a “significant mortality increase” in May, Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova says.

– China hails ‘achievements’ –

China praises its own response to the coronavirus outbreak, Premier Li Keqiang saying Beijing has made “major strategic achievements”.

Li says China now faces “immense” economic challenges — it has not set an annual growth target for the first time in decades.

– More than 335,000 deaths –

The pandemic has killed at least 335,538 people worldwide since it surfaced in China late last year, according to an AFP tally at 1900 GMT on Friday based on official sources.

There have been more than 5,158,750 officially recorded cases in 196 countries and territories.

The United States has recorded the most deaths at 95,490. It is followed by Britain with 36,393, Italy with 32,616, Spain with 28,628 and France with 28,289.

– No benefits from chloroquine –

There is no benefit in treating coronavirus patients with anti-viral drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine and they even increase the likelihood of them dying in hospital, according to a study published in The Lancet.

– Vaccination disruption –

The pandemic is putting at least 80 million children’s lives at risk by disrupting routine immunisation programmes against killer diseases like diphtheria, measles and pneumonia, the WHO and UNICEF say.

– Quarantine in Britain –

Britain is to introduce a quarantine period of 14 days for those arriving in the UK, Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis says.

– Easing lockdowns –

Madrid and Barcelona, until now excluded from Spain’s loosening of lockdown restrictions, will be able to reopen museums, hotels and bar terraces from Monday.

Iceland says it will reopen discos, bars and gyms next week.

Florence’s Duomo cathedral, one of the Tuscan city’s top tourist attractions, opens to the public on Friday for the first time since March.

– France to hold delayed elections –

France will hold a second round of municipal elections on June 28 after they were called off in March because of the lockdown, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe says.

– Open places of worship: Trump –

US President Donald Trump demands that state governors allow places of worship, including churches, synagogues and mosques, to reopen immediately, describing them “as essential places that provide essential services”.

– US billionaires get richer –

The fortunes of 600 US billionaires rose 15 percent in the two months since the coronavirus pandemic hit, as tech stocks rose during lockdowns, a think tank study finds, with Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg seeing massive gains.

Coronavirus updates: Brazil now 2nd to US in world in COVID cases

A pandemic of the novel coronavirus has now killed more than 338,000 people worldwide.

Over 5.2 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some governments are hiding the scope of their nations' outbreaks.

Since the first cases were detected in China in December, the United States has become the worst-affected country, with more than 1.6 million diagnosed cases and at least 95,972 deaths.

Today's biggest developments:

Researchers aim to vaccinate over 10,000 adults and children across UK Brazil passes Russia to have 2nd-most COVID cases Chechen leader reportedly hospitalized with suspected COVID-19 Study shows coronavirus patients treated with Trump-touted antimalarial drug at higher risk of death Hydroxychloroquine given to 1,300 US veterans who tested positive for COVID-19

Here's how the news is developing today. All times Eastern. Please refresh this page for updates.

10:12 p.m.: New York allows gatherings of 10 or fewer people

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order late Friday allowing for nonessential gatherings of 10 or less in the state.

The decision modified a previous order "to permit any non-essential gathering of ten or fewer individuals, for any lawful purpose or reason, provided that social distancing protocols and cleaning and disinfection protocols required by the Department of Health are adhered to."

The order will be in place for one month.

New York has the highest number of cases -- over 350,000 -- and deaths -- over 28,800 -- in the country.

9:28 p.m.: Government order will allow pro athletes into country

The Department of Homeland Security announced it will allow foreign professional athletes into the country. The government will work with a handful of sports leagues to determine who will be let in.

"In today's environment, Americans need their sports," acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf said in a statement. "It’s time to reopen the economy and it’s time we get our professional athletes back to work."

DHS said it would work with leagues to allow the "specific athletes, essential staff, team and league leadership, spouses, and dependents covered by this exemption."

Among the leagues included in the statement were the MLB, NBA, WNBA, PGA, LPGA, NHL, ATP and WTA. Each of those leagues has shut down their seasons due to COVID-19.

8:59 p.m.: Brazil now 2nd globally in COVID-19 cases

Brazil has had the fastest-growing number of cases in the world over the past week and Brazil passed Russia Friday in total cases. It is now only behind the U.S. in number of cases.

The hardest-hit areas are São Paulo, where the mayor has said the health system could collapse in the next week or two, and the Amazon regions where health infrastructure is worse and poor indigenous communities are affected.

According to the country's health ministry, Brazil now has 330,890 confirmed cases, an increase of 20,803 from yesterday, and 21,048 deaths -- up 1,001 from a day prior. Russia has just over 326,000 cases.

President Jair Bolsonaro, already under fire for his handling of the outbreak -- through he remains defiantly opposed to lockdowns and keeps pushing the unproven drug hydroxychloroquine -- is now facing another political scandal that threatens his presidency.

Bolsonaro, a close ally of President Donald Trump, is furious that opponents in Congress have been asking for Bolsonaro's phone and that of his son Carlos as part of a probe into allegations of former Minister of Justice Sergio Moro. Moro said that Bolsonaro tried to interfere in federal police investigations.
