The investment firm Social Capital has hired Marc Mezvinsky as vice chairman as it expands beyond traditional venture capital.
Mezvinsky will take responsibility for helping the firm forge ties with governments, companies and other investors, founder Chamath Palihapitiya said Thursday in a blog post on Medium. Based in New York, Mezvinsky started in April, a firm spokeswoman said.
"I have seen firsthand his ability to think strategically and engage equally well with both CEOs and engineers," Palihapitiya, who also is a part-owner of the National Basketball Association's Golden State Warriors, wrote about Mezvinsky. "He has a common touch which is rare for someone with such deep experiences and relationships in politics, finance and philanthropy."
After years leading user growth at Facebook, Palihapitiya founded Social Capital as a venture firm in 2011, most recently raising a $600 million fund in 2015. Last year, Social Capital expanded into hedge fund investing with its Social Capital Public Equity Partners, which became known for a large investment in Amazon.
At the end of last year, Mezvinsky shut down Eaglevale Partners, the hedge fund he founded in 2011. Previously, he worked at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and 3G Capital, where he was a partner. He is married to Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
