PM to launch Southern Development Plan

The government will launch the Southern Development Plan aimed at developing the Southern Province, along with the development of Hambantota assisted by China, on January 7 in Hambantota.

The launch will take place in the presence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Chinese Ambassador Yi Xianliang and several key ministers, Chairman of Ruhunu Development Corporation, Ajita de Costa told Business Observer.

The launch also coincides with the government’s vision for an era of sustainable development called Thirasara Yugayaka Thewasara Arambuma, starting on January 1. Under this project, China will set up several ventures including port, refinery and industrial zones. The proposed industrial zone to be set up by China will spread from Hambantota to Moneragala and Matara.

China will be provided 15,000 acres of land and it will be released on a phase-by-phase basis depending on their availability.

The Survey Department recently carried out a survey to determine the extent of government lands in those areas.

Meanwhile Minister Malik Samarawickrama told the media last month that the government hopes to sign an agreement with the China Merchants Port Holdings Company Ltd. (CMPort) to set up a joint venture to run the port in Hambantota.

According to the agreement, China Merchant Holdings will have a 85 percent stake in the new venture and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, 15 percent.

For me following have to be considered:

- Environmental effect
- Is land from people taken? if so what is the compensation?
- Are lands from other important projects (current / future) taken? what is the plan for those others that will be sacrificed
- Future security threat/s to Sri Lanka by doing so
- Economic and Social value addition to our Country

Our people act like we have a severe shortage of lands and investors are coming in numbers. Sadly the opposite is true. We have massive amount of unutilized lands, but we rarely get any sizable investment. Our economy said to be open since 1977 but the peoples minds are closed and blind.

On the other hand we should look into our interests and our people while doing so. If that is done, there is no issue.

As Kithsiri mentioned, Chinese ppl are also not coming only for "business" . That is the story we were told to by the previous Govt and now only they are telling the "real story" to their followers (balaya thiyenakota mole ne  OR  kiyanne ne...) Followers just say what they were told to as they believe koti nagitinawa + rata suddata/kotinta liyala denawa

Look what's going on in some part of Africa with Chinese so-called Chines investments and then you will understand.

China's plan for SL started atleast 5 years back.

wrong is wrong no matter who is done...... and saying that we'are doing the same mistake is because someone previously have done it is the dumbest excuse I hear.
I may be a conservative person but in my view, we don't necessarily have to give our soil and resources to other countries to get developed. and mark me it also wont bring any such develop

Yes wrong is wrong - whoever does it. This is what most Sri Lankans have to learn. Normally it is "ape ewun rata kanakota Uda balan innawa. Wena ekek ekama karanakota..... " . Let's be against both.

General rules should be same for all . Other than A few conditions, a local or a foreigner; Sinhalese or Muslim or Tamil; Buddhist or Christian or Hindu ; Male or Female ; gay or lesbian.... anyone should be able to have the same opportunity to grow in Sri Lanka. Nobody is superior by birth !

From what i hear , Hambanthota will give only 5000 acres or less. Other areas such as Monaragala, etc will provide the rest. Few years back i went to Ampara via Monaragala route and saw hours and hours driving with empty land on either side (just referring to the land on the side of the main road). Much can be done than say "it is ours" and do nothing.

Vietnam is way ahead of us due to their stance towards free trade (not scared like us by protecting locals forever as they can't compete/scared). Apart from that their minds are not poisoned by nationalistic ideologies and they work very hard. There are other reasons as well...but without the above none would be of importance.

I do not expect the emplyees to get rich, but the business community as a whole. I was referring to KDDP type investors. At present we have a handful, India and China has the fastest growing number of new millionairs. We need some more. Do we have a local investor who can buy out Sri Lankan air lines or Hambanthota port. I will give a detailed answer for your question later.
