Re: Obituary Notice.

Post by The Alchemist on Fri Aug 12, 2016 3:18 pm

yes, one of pakistan's all time greats. along with the 70's batting stars like Zaheer Abbas, Majid Khan , Javed Miandad etc.
his 2 brothers Sadiq & Mushtaq also played for pakistan in the early 70's.

i remember around mid-70, the pakistan team was in town. sadiq & mushtaq Mohammed, majid khan, zaheer abbas, asif iqbal, wasim raja, wasim bari, mudassar nassar, imran khan, javed miandad (youngest), captain intikhab alam, safraz nawaz, asif masood etc.
i was dragged to the then oberoi by my sisters and cousins to meet them. i was sitting in a corner and a young javed miandad came upto me and asked me what i wanted to drink. i said an orange juice and he ordered for me. and we talked cricket for about half an hour. the street fighter from karachi whom vivian richards said that if he could get one batsmen to bat for his life, he will choose Javed Miandad.

the article gets it wrong about the little master (sachin). after hanif, the original little master was Sunil Gavaskar. who modelled his batting after Hanif. Legend has it that when Gavaskar was at the Nets at the Brabourne Stadium practicing his forward defence, the "thuk" sound could be heard at Churchgate station. (a little bombay geography is required to really understand this Very Happy ).

May the Turf lie lightly on the Great Hanif !

Wow. It must have been quite an experience. Very Happy
(Asif Masood had a very peculiar start up to his run up and I remember watching them play from one of the Air Force flats then).

Oh Al,

So you're quite a sports fan ha?
Sweet right up; not second to your financial analysis!

BTW: Mid 70's mean a long time ago; isn't it?
Hope you were younger than Hanif when you met them.

He could have been the Garfield Sobers of Sri Lanka

Post by කිත්සිරි ද සිල්වා on Wed Sep 28, 2016 6:27 pm

During the pre-Test era Sri Lanka produced some wonderful cricketers who could easily have gone and represented the country with distinction in Test and One-day cricket.

As a result of Sri Lanka then being an associate member of the ICC the talents of these marvelous personalities were confined to school cricket and unofficial matches against visiting sides which were few and far between.

One such outstanding talent was Anura de Silva, who captained Nalanda College in the late sixties and made a name for himself in the schools’ circuit as one of the finest all-round cricketers to emerge from that institution that has produced so many national players who had gone onto represent the country with greatness after De Silva.

Creative musician; lovely entertainer, above all, a humble person.

We have lost a national symbol of the country.

RIP Sir!

RIP Costa.

As a boy of around 10, I saw Costa acting in Kora saha Andhaya at the Lumbini Theater, I can still feel the emotional impact of the performance. Thank you Sir.
