Gambling was the real reason for Mathematicians to develop theories on probability.
Economists had varying views on gambling and gambling was a favorite pastie since old days..

Adam Smith who wrote Wealth of Nations was worried about gambling...
Although Smith was keenly aware that the human propensity to take risk propelled economic progress, he feared that society would suffer when the propensity ran amuck.
So he was careful to balance moral sentiments against the benefits of free market.

A hundred and sixty years later, another great English economist, John Maynard Keynes agreed; " When the capital development of a country become the by-product of the activities of a casino, the job is likely to be ill-done."
Yet the world would be a dull place if people lacked conceit and confidence in their own good fortune.
Keynes had to admit that " If human nature felt no temptation to take a chance... there might not be much investments merely as a result of cold calculations.."...
