While criticizing the country’s foreign policy JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday revealed names of relatives of government politicians and henchmen in the Foreign Service.
Speaking in Parliament he also said that Sri Lanka's Foreign Service has become a branch of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party because of these appointments and also revealed that most of the appointments had been made based on relationship and not based on education qualifications.

Appointment of unqualified people to manage public sector and other important institution is general practice of this govt

Previous govt including UNP also did same mistake

But the problem is aggravated under this govt

This is pathetic and unfortunately not a new situation.
There were worst cases in previous regimes too.  
This will continue with future governments also because no one will bring a law to prohibit appointing outside FS.


This situation escalated after 1977.
Sons and daughters were appointed to some posts and sent to UK, France and USA with free accommodation, salary and vehicles for their studies .  If no vacancies, new posts were created. I think present deputy leader of an opposition party can recall how he used the DPL vehicle of our High Com.  in UK to go to University and to other places...

Somehow, I think there is a necessity to appoint trustworthy 'friends' to some places.

When Separatists started   fighting in 1980s most of important places in West were served by Tamil officials  in Foreign Service. Some of them secretly helped LTTE. Others had to obey   to save their families in North.
When foreign media and Governments inquire about the situation in Sri Lanka from our representative ( Ambassadors / HCs) they stated minority is being  harassed and killed  by Sinhalese. LTTE used them smartly for years. They spread their network very successfully with the help of Govt. appointed officials.
